Your exhaust is an essential part of your vehicle, but it rarely gets the attention it deserves from drivers when it comes to maintenance.

There are several easy checks which can be done to identify any issues which will determine if your exhaust needs to be changed.

Brush off the rust from the exhaust and inspect it for small holes. These can draw in air which will ignite any unburnt fuel. This could cause a backfire in the exhaust and lead to further damage.

Inspect the exhaust’s joints and connections for black marks. If you come across these signs of gas escape, then you may be able to solve the problem by tightening the clamps or replacing any rusted studs.

Check that the supports which hold the exhaust to the chassis are placed correctly around the car’s bodywork and are all in good condition.

You will often know when you have an exhaust leak due to the loud rasping noise put out by the system.

Once you have determined there’s an issue with your exhaust you should look to have it replaced as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your vehicle.
