Caring for your vehicle’s tyres is a key part of any car maintenance programme.

As well as checking that your tyres are in a sound physical condition, it is also important to keep them at the recommended tyre pressures highlighted in the vehicle manual.

Having properly inflated tyres protects against tyre damage. Driving with low pressure tyres also increases fuel consumption.

Tyres which are run over or under pressure wear unevenly and will need to be replaced sooner.

Uneven tyre ware can also be caused when the wheel tracking is out of alignment. Accurate wheel alignment, where the wheels and axels are properly aligned, ensures that your car handles at its optimum level.

You must also be mindful of tyre tread depth. This is important because it helps remove water between the tyre and road, ensuring the car remains under control and reduces the risk of aquaplaning.

Tyres do wear out over time, and this can be accelerated by uneven road surfaces, the tyre design and a high-speed and hard braking driving style.

If you are in any doubt about the condition of your vehicle’s tyres you must get them checked immediately.
